“Cheng Lertkitsomboon : Master Sculptor”

His masterpiece sculpture is a miniature goddess of mercy (Kuan-im) carving sized of 6.2 x 14.2 mm. He created equipment from syringes to work as knives and drills. He used a magnifying glass glued to the cover of a condensed milk can.

Moreover, he carved more than 3,000 pieces of wood of Chinese gods and door panels in many Phuket shrines, houses, neighboring provinces and Malaysia. The one wooden carving that he was so proud of was made by Theptharo wood in the real size of Luangphor Chaem of Chalong Temple. Then it was handed to be Phuket possession.

Cheng Lertkitsomboon was admired and awarded as the master artist in the field of southern culture for carving in 1989.




Thiensak Ongphruksa : Chinese Puppet

Thiensak Ongphruksa is an original Phuketian and his former name was Thao Sae-ong. He is the one who inherited the art of Chinese (Fujian) puppet performance from his father (In Sae-ong) in a small theatre called “Kaleh” in 1967.

This performance generally takes place during the Chinese New Year period. There would be a God blessing ceremony on the last day, they will visit villages which have altar tables in front of the houses. Puppet performance is the way to bless the house owners and their families. Furthermore, there is one event named “Wan Kerd Phra” (God’s birthday) at Phuket shrines around the island. They would invite the puppet performers to perform in order to wish the shrines committee and people well.

Normally, the Kaleh Show consists of 3 puppets which are Sengkang-ea (Thienhoo-nguansoey) or red face puppet, Jor-nguan (pandit) and Hooyin. The musical instruments are the Lorko, Kong and Chinese flute. The show takes about 10 minutes telling the story of the young Jor-nguan who graduated and returned home to invite villagers to thank god in heaven for his graduation.
